Tsunami Inundation - Jakarta, Indonesia

FlowrouteTM is also used to predict depth, extent, duration and velocity of flooding caused by a tsunami. This modelling is used by insurers, government and emergency planners to help define those areas at greatest risk of tsunami, enabling:

  • Improved underwriting performance
  • More accurate identification of accumulations
  • Improved loss estimation
  • Optimised route planning for evacuation and disaster recovery

The Great Indian Ocean tsunami of December 26th 2004 took the lives of over three hundred thousand people, with an estimated economic impact of more than $13 billion. The impact to the insurance industry was relatively modest due to the low insurance penetration in the affected areas. However it has been estimated that if the insurance penetration was similar to that of most developed countries, losses to the insurance industry would have exceeded $100 billion.

Due to the nature of the tsunami risk in the Pacific Ocean, the likelihood of a large tsunami affecting a developed country is significant. Insurers should act now to protect themselves from the potentially catastrophic losses associated with tsunami.
